Hanson, an office manager, needs to find a courier to deliver a package. The first courier he is considering charges a fee of $10 plus $7 per kilogram. The second charges $12 plus $6 per kilogram. Hanson determines that, given his package's weight, the two courier services are equivalent in terms of cost. How much will it cost? What is the weight?

Answer:

The weight is 2 kg

The cost is $24

Explanation:

You have to set the equations equal to each other.

The first equation is 10 + 7k

The second equation is 12 +6k

10 + 7k = 12 + 6k Subtract 10 from each side

-10 -10

7k = 2 + 6k Subtract 6k from each side

-6k -6k

2 = k This is the weight when both couriers are the same price

If k = 2. you plug that in for k into either equation

10 + 7(2)

10 + 14

24 This is the cost
