Why is china not considered a democracy despite contesting regular elections?

Answer:

The Constitution also holds that the China is a one-party state that is governed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). This gives the CCP a total monopoly of political power which it frequently exercises. All political opposition except those that have clearance by the CCP is illegal.
