This is true. Initially, plants make food using energy from the sun. The plants are then eaten by herbivores (or omnivores) which are then in turn eaten by carnivores (or larger omnivores) and so on up the food chain. However, the initial energy comes from the sun. Nothing would be able to survive without it.
