first step is to expand -4 is used to multiply 5x + 3y

first know that - × + = -

- × - = +

-4 × 5x = -20x

-4 × 3y = -12y

-2 × 2x = -4x

-2 × -8y = 16y

-4(5x + 3y)-2(2x - 8y) = -20x - 12y - 4x + 16y

we can rearrange this by collecting like terms close to each other

-20x - 4x - 12y + 16y = -24x + 4y
