Think about it that you have the total yield 10^8 kg of rice from 10^5 km^2 of land. You now only want How much does 1 km^2 of land produce. Which can be shown as

10^8/10^5=??/1. To get the denominator to equal one you divide the top and bottom of the first problem by 10^5. 10^8/10^5 is 10^3. So it's 10^3 kg
