How might both sides believe that they were fighting for just a cause in the civil war?

Answer:

In one side (the north) they were fighting to not have slaves. This means that the north did not want slaves and wanted them to be free. While in the south it was differant. They wanted slavery. In the south slavery was a big industry for the south. So if they lose it, they will have to start breaking there back
