The easiest way to calculate the area of the path is to work out the entire area of the path and square plot, then subtract the area of the green square from it.

Area of a square = (side length)²

Area of green square = 10² = 10 x 10 = 100 m²

We are told that the width of the path is 2 m, so the side length of the square incorporating the path AND the green square will be:

side length of green square + 2 + 2 = 10 + 2 + 2 = 14 m

Therefore, entire area = 14² = 14 x 14 = 196 m²

To find the area of the path only:

entire area - area of green square = 196 - 100 = 96 m²

So the area of the path is 96 m²
