here is the deal / the rules for scientific notation

1) the number in front of the
10^(x) has to be
\geq 1 and < 9

that rule is VERY IMPORTANT...
\geq 1 and < 9

2) if you move a decimal point to the left the exponent goes up by one

3) if you move the decimal to the right it goes down by one

examples:

314,000,000,000

starting from the right we move the decimal "11" positions to get to

3.14 (notice that I can not stop at 31.4 because that is greater than 10)

so the answer would be 3.14 x
10^(11)

your question 0.000 008 54 has to move the decimal SIX positions to

the the right (-6) ... 8.54 x
10^(-6)
