x² + 6x + 1 = 0 ( subtract 1 from both sides )

x² + 6x = - 1

Using the method of completing the square

add/ subtract ( half the coefficient of the x- term)² to both sides

x² + 2(3)x + 9 = - 1 + 9

(x + 3)² = 8 ( take the square root of both sides )

x + 3 = ±
√(8) = ± 2
√(2) ( subtract 3 from both sides )

x = - 3 ± 2
√(2)

Then

x = - 3 - 2
√(2) , x = - 3 + 2
√(2)
