x=1/2, y=4

Explanation:

Double both sides of the top equation:

4x+6y=26

Now subtract boths sides of the second one from the first one:

(4x+6y) - (4x-y) = 26 - (-2)

7y = 28

so y = 4

4x-y=-2 so 4x-4=-2

4x=2

x=1/2
