Explanation:

The greatest common factor (GCF) of 24 and 9 is 3. By taking out a 3 from the quantity, you get a -8 from the -24 and a 3w from the 9w. But the 3 doesn't disappear. It is put outside of the quantity to indicate that it has been taken out and can be put back in.
