A company sells 4 pairs of jeans for every 9 shirts. At this rate, if they sell 585 shirts, how many pairs of jeans do they sell?

You put the ratio of jeans to shirts as 4/9 and make the ratio of 585 shirts be x/585. You divide 585 by 9 and use that quotient to multiply the number of jeans which is 4. That will get you 260 jeans per 585 shirts.
