to prove

two points on the line (0,0) and (2,-1)

slope is rise/run - change in y/change in x

[0-(-1)]/(0-2)

=1/-2

=-1/2

the coefficient is negative so the slope is negative

a positive slope would slope upwards from left to right

a slope of 0 would be horizontal

an undefined slope would be vertical
