Question 1: Nya's experience with the thorn tells the reader that she is a brave, fearless girl and that she refuses to let anything stop her from reaching the water that will save her family. One personality trait that could be used to describe her is "courageous".

Question 2: Salva uses a simile to describe the plane he saw, reporting it as a "sleek, evil bird". The description tells us that the plane is large and unfriendly-looking, possibly used as a tool of war.

Question 3: When Salva sees the rebels on the side of the road he is concerned. He wonders about his family, and he describes his emotions with words like terror.

Question 4: Salva's decision to attempt to join the men speaks to his bravery, as well as his pride. He believed he was being the son his father would be proud of by approaching the men boldly.

Question 5: The rebels are supposed to be good guys, but fighting in the war had made them rather tough, and the way they see it is that they can't be seen as soft by anyone, not even their own people.

Question 6: Salva repeats the words "Where is my family?" throughout the chapter because he is very worried about his family and wonders if he will see them again, especially after he finds out they weren't in the group of Loun-Arikk survivors.

Question 7: Everyone leaves Salva behind at the end of the chapter because they could not afford to take care of a child, while barely surviving themselves; they believed he would only be a burden that they could not carry.
