It is in their blood. Savagery is their intrinsic behavior, no matter what they do, they will resort back to the behaviours of their ancestors, as their blood still run through them. In a nutshell, it is human nature. At the end of the day, only the strongest survive, and when human conscience meets a quagmire, it tends to resort to the most simplest solution it can think of; savagery.
