Find the equation of the line perpendicular to y = 2x + 5 that

passes through the point (3, -1) in slope-intercept form.
A. Y=-2x-5
B. Y=1/2x+5/2
C. Y=2x-5
D. Y=-1/2x+1/2

Answer: D. y = -1/2x + 1/2

Explanation:


The easiest way to do this as it is multiple choice is to plug in the values of x(3) and y(-1) in every choice and see if it is right. For example, choice A can’t be right, since -1 does not equal -2(3)-5 (which is -11). When solving choice D’s equation though, both sides are equal to each other.

y = -1/2x+1/2

-1 = -1/2(3)+1/2

-1 = -1.5+1/2

-1 = -1.
