Answer:

Explanation:

This is adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators.

With addition like 1/2 + 4/10, you have to find the LCM for the denominator. (LCM, Least common multiple) (the denominator is the bottom number on the fraction)

Multiples of 2 (for 1/2) are 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12...

Multiples of 10 (for 4/10) are 10, 20, 30, 40...

The LCM of 2 and 10 is 10 because 10 is the first number both times tables (10 and 2) share when multiplying by themselves.

Now that you multiplied 2 by 5 to get 10 you have to do the same to the 1 in 1/2. What you do to the denominator you have to do to the numerator as well. 5 x 1 is 5 now you have 5/10 in place of 1/2.

now you can rewrite the problem as 5/10 + 4/10 and both denominators are the same number. Now you just add the top numbers 5 + 4 which is 9. Your answer would be 9/10.

With subtraction 10/12 - 6/10, you also find the LCM of the denominator, so

12, 24, 36, 48, 60...

10, 20, 30, 40, 50 60...

The LCM of 12 and 10 is 60

12 x 5 = 60 and 10 x 6 = 60 so now you do the same to the numerator.

10 x 5 = 50 and 6 x 6 = 36 now our problem looks like this: 50/60 - 36/60

You now subtract the numerators 50-36=14 and rewrite your problem keeping the same denominator as both fractions. 14/60

Not all teachers want you to simplify but your paper states "simplest form" so with 14/60 you find the GCM of 14 and 60 which is 2 because

the greatest common factors of 14 are 1, 2, 7, 14...

the greatest common factors of 60 are 1, 2, 3, 4...

then divide both 14 and 60 by 2 now it's 7/30

Answer to problem 1: 36/60 or 7/30 simplified

Answer to problem 2: 9/10 (which is already in its simplest form and can't be simplified anymore)

Answer to problem 3: 7/12

Answer to problem 4: 1 3/10

Answer to problem 5: 1/4

Answer to problem 6: 1 1/12
