Five years ago, father's age was 4 times his son's age. Now the sum of their ages is 45 years. Find their present age.​

Explanation:

let f = the father's current age

let s = the son's current age

f - 5 = 4(s-5)

f + s = 45 → f = 45-s

Substitute 45 - s into the first equation for f

45 - s - 5 = 4(s -5) Combine like terms and distribute the 4

40 -s = 4s - 20 Add s to both sides

40 = 5s - 20 Add 20 to both sides

60 = 5s Divide both sides by 5

12 = s

The son is 12 years old.

f + s = 45 Substitute 12 for s and solve for f

f + 12 = 45 Subtract 12 from both sides

f = 33

The father is 33 years old.
