Chinese ancient novels sprouted in the pre Qin period and developed in the Han, Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern dynasties. At that time, they were called "note novels", mainly including novels about people with aspirations and novels about supernatural beings. The Tang Dynasty was the mature period of novels, and novels at that time were called legends. During the Song and Jin dynasties, vernacular novels were popular. During the late Yuan and Ming and Qing dynasties, the development of novels reached its peak, with the emergence of long vernacular novels.
