The pandemic has taught the U.S. health care community that policymaking needs to be more flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances. Some policies, such as expanding telehealth services, were successful in increasing access to care. However, the lack of preparedness for a pandemic and inadequate funding for public health systems were major shortcomings. To minimize long-term negative consequences, new policies are needed to address health disparities, increase funding for public health systems, and improve coordination between federal and state governments.
