Prophase - This is the first stage of mitosis. The cell’s nuclear membrane breaks down. Also, long strands of DNA condense and thicken. This makes the chromosomes visible. The replicated chromosomes appear as identical strands called sister chromatids. These sister chromatids are joined together by something called a centromere.
Metaphase - This is the second phase of mitosis. Spindle fibres, which are at opposite ends of the cell, move sister chromatids to the center of the cell.
Anaphase - This is the third phase of mitosis. The centromeres are split to separate the chromatids. The spindle fibres move the chromatids to the opposite ends of the cell.
Telophase - This is the fourth and final phase of mitosis. Nuclear membranes form around the new groups of daughter chromosomes.
