Answer:

x = 3, \: x = - 7

Explanation:

using \: the \: quadratic \: formula \\ x = \frac{ - b± \sqrt{b {}^(2) - 4ac} }{2a}

compare \: with \: the \: general \: form \: of \: quadratic \: equation \\ ax {}^(2) + bx + c

a = 1, \: b = 4, \: c = - 21

substituting; \\ x = \: \frac{ - 4± \sqrt{4 {}^(2) - 4 * 1 * - 21 } }{2 * 1}

x = ( - 4 ± √(16 + 84) )/(2)

x = ( - 4± √(100) )/(2)

x = ( - 4±10)/(2)

x = ( - 4 + 10)/(2) \: or \: x = ( - 4 - 10)/(2)

x = (6)/(2) \: or \: x \: ( - 14)/(2)

Therefore X = 3, X = -7
