A. Stanley Milgram.
Stanley Milgram conducted a famous series of experiments in the 1960s that studied obedience to authority. In the experiments, participants were asked to administer increasingly strong electric shocks to another person (who was actually a confederate and not actually receiving shocks) when instructed to do so by an authority figure. Despite the fact that the shocks were painful and potentially lethal, a large percentage of participants continued to obey the authority figure and administer shocks even when they believed it was morally wrong to do so. Milgram's work demonstrated the powerful influence that authority figures can have on individuals, even when they are being asked to do something that goes against their own moral beliefs.
