Explanation:

first solve the equation for x=-2 and x=4

(-2^2)-2=4-2=2

(4^2)-2=16-2=14

so when x=-2 the coordinate is (-2,2) and when x=4 the coordinate is (4,14)

now use the average rate of change formula:

(14-2)/(4-(-2))=12/6=2, so the rate of change is 2
