f(x+h) - f(x)

the net change in the function's value or net change in output

for a given change in input.

input = x, output =
f(x), net change in input = h

if
f(x) = x^2

then for a change in x from 2 to 4

net change in output

= f(4)-f(2)

= 4^2 - 2^2

= 16 - 4

= \bold{12}
