Assuming this is world history, the Catholic Church ripped off people to make more profit by telling people that they're dead relatives/friends would not get into heaven or be forgiven by god as they have sinned, and if you payed an "indulgence", that would be the only way for them to get into heaven/be forgiven. In reality it was a money making scheme which robbed the poor.
