Explanation:

To do this you need to split the composite shape into two separate shapes; a triangle and a rectangle.

To work out the area of the rectangle you have to do 6x7=42

Then to work out the area of the triangle you have to do 13-7 to get the height of only the triangle h (height)=6

Then to find out the base of the triangle you have to do 6-3 as 6 is the overall length b (base)=3

The formula for the area of the triangle is b×h/2 (base times height divided by 2) which is also displayed as 3x6/2=9 which is the area of the triangle

So to work out the area of the composite shape you have to add the area of the rectangle and the area of the triangle (42+9).
