An elevator weighing 500kg is to be lifted up at a constant velocity of 0.4m/s. Calculate the power of the motor required for this purpose.

We know that

Power=Work done/time

Power=Work done * Distance/ time ----->eq(1)

where,

Work done=Mg

Distance=0.4m

time=1 s

where M=>mass of the object,

g=>acceleration due to gravity

g=9.8 m/s² and M=500Kg

So,

Work done=500 * 9.8=4900 J

Substituting the values in eq(1) we get

Power = (4900*0.4)/1 = 1960 Watt

750 Watt = 1 hp

1960 Watt = (1*1960)/750

=2.613 hp
