Answer: 240

Work Shown

x = original number

0.75x = 75% of that number

x - 0.75x = reduce by 75%

x - 0.75x = 0.25x = meaning you're left with 25% of the original number after reduction.

0.25x = 60

x = 60/0.25

x = 240 is the original number.

Note how dividing by 0.25 is the same as multiplying by 4. This is because 0.25 = 1/4; and dividing by 1/4 means multiplying by 4/1.

-------------

Check:

240 = original number

75% of 240 = 0.75*240 = 180 and 240 - 180 = 60

This confirms the answer.

Or another way you could confirm is to write:

0.25*240 = 60
