What exactly goes into electing the person who sits in the Oval Office?

Each state has electoral votes depending on how big the state is. If there are more, for example, republican votes in that state, all those electoral votes become republican and are added to the republican candidate's trip to 270. The first candidate who wins is names president elect. On the next January 20th, that president elect becomes president through a ceremony called the inauguration.
