If x = 6 the problem should look like this:

2 (x) + 8 = y -> place the 6 where x is.

2 (6) + 8 = y -> remember () means to multiply.

2 times 6 , add 8 , equals y

12 + 8 =y -> 12 +8 equals 20

20 = y
