How to obtain the dot structure of compounds
Counting the total number of valence electrons from every atom is the first step towards obtaining the Lewis dot structure of a compound. Establish bonding pairs between the central atom and the other atoms by connecting them. To finish octets, add lone pairs, taking into account double or triple bonds if required.
Reduce formal charges and make sure the molecule's total charge is in line with the formal charges. The resulting structure helps to understand the geometry and bonding of chemical compounds by providing a simplified representation of electron distribution.
