The Ottoman Empire practiced religious tolerance throughout the empire, but this exempted non-muslims from fully participating in society. The Ottoman Empire pushed the Jiyza tax on non-Muslims which meant anyone who was not willing to convert to Islam could only practice their religion by paying this tax.
