The system of equation required is :

d = 2c - 5

(c + 3) / (d + 3) = 3/4

b.)

The pet shop couldnt initially have 15 cats and 20 dogs

c.) Number of cats is 9 and number of dogs is 13

A.)

The system of equation which can be used to solve the problem is :

  • d = 2c - 5 ___ (1)
  • (c + 3) / (d + 3) = 3/4 ___ (2)

b.)

No, the pet shop couldnt initially have 15 cats and 20 dogs because;

  • (15+3)/(20+3) ≠ 3/4

c.)

Substituting the value of d in (1) into (2)

(3 + c) / (2c - 5 + 3) = 3/4

cross multiply

3(2c - 2) = 4(3 + c)

6c - 6 = 12 + 4c

6c - 4c = 12 + 6

2c = 18

c = 9

From (1)

d = 2(9) - 5

d = 18 - 5

d = 13
