12 x 8 / 2 = 48

Explanation:

To find the area of a triangle the formula is base times height divided by 2. In this case, count the squares on the bottom of the triangle which is 12. Then count the squares that are going vertical which are 8. So 12 x 8 = 96. Then you need to divide by 2 since 96 is the area of the square and the triangle's area is exactly half of that. And so 96/2 = 48 which is your answer.
