Poetry is a short form of literature that uses very compressed and vivid language to send a message to the readers. Text in poems is often organised into stanzas, or groups of short lines. For example, the poem “No Images” by William Waring Cuney has three stanzas. Poems have a speaker, or the voice, which tells the story. The speaker in “No Images” is an unknown observer, we don’t know if it’s a man or a woman. Use of images and nuances is important in poems because they help the reader better understand the emotions or ideas expressed in the poem. The image of palm trees in “No images” represent a sunny vacation spot, while the image of dish water gives the reader an idea of the everyday life of the woman depicted in the poem. Sometimes rhyme schemes are integrated into poems to add effect. “No Images” has rhyming words like “beauty”, “body” and “glory” in the first stanza, but the following stanzas have no rhyme schemes.
