Final answer:

For the problems presented, the bus driver ends up 4 km from the starting point after driving and returning part way, and the driver who goes below and then rises above sea level ends up 40 feet below sea level.

Step-by-step explanation:

The student has two separate problems to solve using integers and knowledge of displacement in Physics.

Problem a)

The expression for the first problem is: Start Position - (Driven Distance - Return Distance). If the starting point is considered as 0 km, then after driving 8 km away, the position is at +8 km. Returning 4 km towards the starting point means the position is at +8 km - 4 km = +4 km. Thus, the difference from the starting to the end point is 4 km.

Problem b)

The expression for the second problem is: Initial Position + Descent - Ascent. Initially, the driver is at sea level (0 feet), then drives down 92 feet below sea level, so now the position is at -92 feet. Rising 52 feet from this position brings us to -92 feet + 52 feet = -40 feet. So, the final position is 40 feet below sea level.
