Bill, Charlie and Dave share some money in the ration 2:3:5. Dave receives £30 more than Charlie. How much did they share in total?

Explanation:

Suppose Charlie received £
x, then Dave received £
(x+30).

Because the ratio of Charlie to David is 3:5, we have


5x=3(x+30) (inverse proportion)


5x=3x+90\\2x=90\\x=45

We now know that 3 parts of the ratio represents £45, so 1 part would represent £15.

So the total amount is 10 parts = £150.
