I need to run an experiment on the effect of temperature on refractive index of a liquid, and in order to make the change most visible and have the lowest percent uncertainty I need the change in refractive index to be as high as possible. What are some liquid with high changes in refractive index with change in temp, higher change then water ideally.

Final answer:

To find a liquid with a high change in refractive index with temperature, look for liquids with a large coefficient of thermal expansion. Ethanol and carbon disulfide are examples of liquids with high changes in refractive index.

Step-by-step explanation:

The refractive index of a liquid determines how much the light bends when it passes through the liquid. To find a liquid with a high change in refractive index with temperature, you can look for liquids that have a large coefficient of thermal expansion.

This means that their refractive index changes significantly with a change in temperature.

One example of a liquid with a high change in refractive index with temperature is ethanol. Ethanol has a higher refractive index than water and its refractive index decreases as the temperature increases.

This means that the change in refractive index with temperature is higher for ethanol compared to water.

Another example is carbon disulfide. Carbon disulfide has a higher refractive index than both water and ethanol, and its refractive index increases as the temperature increases

This means that the change in refractive index with temperature is higher for carbon disulfide compared to both water and ethanol.
