Explanation:

x+y = 5 or y = 5-x <==== given

xy = 5 <==== given sub in the definition of 'y'

x (5-x) = 5

-x^2 + 5x -5 = 0

Use quadratic formula to find x and y are 5/2 +- sqrt(5) /2
