Answer:

1st option is correct.

kathryn is 6 and her mother is 38

Explanation:

Let her mother's age be y,

y = 2+x²

x+y = 44

y = 44-x

Now,

y = 2+x²

or, 44-x = 2+x²

or, 44-2 = x²+x

or, x²+x = 42

or, x²+x-42 = 0

or, x²+(7-6)x-42 = 0

or, x²+7x-6x-42 = 0

or, x(x+7)-6(x+7) = 0

or, (x+7)(x-6) = 0

Now,

x + 7 = 0

either, x = -7

or,

x-6 = 0

so, x = 6

We know age is never negative so x is 6.

Now,

x+y = 44

or, 6+y = 44

so, y = 38

Answer:

Katherine is 6, Katherine's mother is 38

Explanation:

Katherine: x

Mother: x²+2

equation: x²+x+2=44

x²+x-42

sum: 1

product: -42

numbers: 7, -6

(x+7)(x-6)

x+7=0 so x=-7 but an age cannot be negative

x-6=0 so x=6 this is an appropriate answer

substitue values back in

Katherine : 6

mother: 6²+2 (36+2)=38
