Originally, the United States only wanted New Orleans, but France offered them the whole territory of Louisiana for slightly more. The purpose of the Louisiana purchase was for the US to expand its territory in preparation for war with Britain. Napoleon sold this territory to the US so that he could rebuild the French army in preparation for war against the coalition.
