Ancient cultures tended to depend on rivers since rivers supplied populations with drinking water and irrigation. Overtime, however, technology has changed and grown and we can develop cities in regions that would seem unsuitable for the past. Also, cities have shifted from becoming places located for the sole purpose of survival to becoming places located for convenience. I hope this helps you out.
