A number squared is a number to the power of 2 or the number times itself.

Explanation:

Lets say you have a 4 to the 2nd that would mean that the 4 is multiplied by 4. Dont get the exponent confused as the number to multiply it as. Look at
9^(2) for example, you would multiply the number 9 2 times not 9 times 2 so it would be 9x9.
