At the top of the pyramid were the Peninsulares who were Spanish-born individuals. Below them were the Criollos who were Spanish descendants born in the Americas.
Below step is the Mestizos who were individuals of mixed European and Indigenous American ancestry while Mulattos were of mixed European and African descent.
Further down the pyramid, there were categories like Zambos (African and Indigenous American ancestry) and Pardos (African and European ancestry). At the bottom of the pyramid were enslaved Africans and Indigenous peoples.
