How did the Corps of Discovery use interpreters to understand different languages and dialects along their journey?

Three interpreters were needed to relay the messages from the two officers to the Shoshone chief. Labiche was first spoken to in English by Lewisor Clark. A message was passed from Labiche to Charbonneau in French. Sacagawea then translated the message into Shoshone for her brother after Charbonneau repeated it in Hidatsa.
