A basement membrane is a thin, dense sheet of “specialized, self-assembled extra cellular matrix”. This surrounds *most* animal tissues. Basement membranes traditionally have been viewed as “static protein assemblies”. This provides structural support for the animal tissues. (I tried my best to re-word the definition I know)
