Weakness #1: the government’s inability to tax
Explanation: While Congress can ask states for money, states often refuse and Congress is unable to raise funds for a national army nor to pay off debt from the Revolution.
Weakness #2: no separate executive branch
Explanation: Without a separate executive branch, the national government is denied the means to carry out and enforce Congress’s laws.
Weakness #3: Congress does not have the authority to regulate trade between states and is not the sole creator of currency.
Explaination: Lacking authority to regulate trade between states means Congress is not able to intervene when one state passes a law taxing goods from other states. Congress not being the sole creator of currency leads to several different types of currencies in circulation, states refusing to accept currencies of other states, and ultimately damages the economy.
Reason #1:
The preamble establishes the hopes and goals for the new government to accomplish. This is important because it shows the American people that they are what comes first when it comes to government and the government is there by their grace (popular sovereignty).
Reason #2:
The preamble vaguely outlines the purpose of government which is to form a more perfect union, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty. “Form a more perfect union” means to strengthen the relationship among the states and between the states and the national government. “Establish justice” means having laws and the administration of those laws be fair and reasonable. “Ensure domestic tranquility” means maintains peace and order within the country. “Provide for the common defense” means defending the country from any foreign enemies. “Promote the general welfare” means allowing states and citizens to benefit from the protection of a government. And lastly, “secure the blessings of liberty” means to protect and preserve the liberties for future generations. This is important because it reiterates the government is FOR the people, unlike the government they had previously been under (the British monarchy).
