Solve. Use the lever system equation F₁x = F₂(d-x).

A screwdriver d = 10 in. long is used as a lever to open a can of paint. The tip of the screwdriver is placed under the lip of the can with the fulcrum 0.15 in. from the lip. A force of F₂ = 27 lb is applied to the other end of the screwdriver. Find the force on the lip of the can.

Given:

F_(1)x=F_(2)(d-x)

F_(2)=27Ibs

d=10in

x=0.15 in

Find:

F_(1)

To find the force, replace the variables
F_(2)=27,
d=10,
x=0.15 and solve for
F_(1).

=>
F_(1)x=F_(2)(d-x)\\

=>
F_(1)(.15)=(27)((10)-(.15))\\

=>
F_(1)(.15)=(27)(9.85)\\

=>
F_(1)(.15)=265.95

=>
F_(1)=1773Ibs

Thus the answer is 1773 Ibs.
