2/3 x 5 = 10/3 = 3 1/3

Explanation:

We can rewrite any whole number as itself over 1.

For example,
5 = (5)/(1).

We can use this tactic to rewrite one of the given (equivalent) expressions. I'll use the one on the left side of the equation.


(2)/(3) * 5 = (2)/(3) * (5)/(1)

Then, we can simplify the multiplication of fractions by multiplying out the both the numerators and denominators.


= (2)/(3) * (5)/(1)


= (2* 5)/(3 * 1)


= (10)/(3)
